According to the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs ( UNDESA ), Libyan population amounted to 6,420,000 in 2010, about 90 percent of whom are urban, while the rest are nomadic, semi nomadic, or rural. Libyan population is mostly young, with around 50 percent under 15 years old. According to data published by Adherents.com, approximately 98 percent of Libyans are Muslims, all of whom are Sunni, except for ۶ percent, who are Ibadi-Khariji Muslims in Western Libya, particularly in the Nafusa Mountains region. The remaining 3 percent are Christians, Jews, followers of other religions, and atheists.
Amazigh, the indigenous inhabitants of Libya since the Stone Age, about 4000 BC, constitute the majority of Libyan population. The word Amazigh , possibly meaning "free people," is the acceptable naming of the word "Berber," which has a negative connotation. Those Amazigh are ethnic siblings of ancient and modern Egyptians. The Latin word "Berber" which is derived from barbarism, which imposed upon by Romans and other revolting Amazigh peoples during the Roman occupation, to give the impression that non-Roman populations who fought against the Roman Empire were barbaric and uncivilized. ...
